What type of diet is suggested for diabetes?

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009

I was recently diagnosed with pre-diabetes. I understand exercise and a healthy diet can help prevent me from getting diabetes type 2. I would like to know the specifics of a diabetic diet.

the best you can do to prevent diabetes is follow a pre-diabetic diet. It’s mostly the same diet people with diabetes follow. You should try to avoid carbohydrates as much as possible. A good diet to follow is the glycemic index diet. More information can be found at http://www.diabeticmenu-blog.com/glycemic-menu.html

Type 2 diabetes diets?

Saturday, November 21st, 2009

Just found out that I am hyperinsulinemia. It is what happens prior to becomeing type 2 diabetic. I knew I didn’t feel right so I Kept going 2 the doctor and finally she tested my blood and found out that I had way to much insulin in my body, so I am taking a type 2 diabetic medication. I now need to know what I can do to help myself. I have asked many questions and no one really has giving me good answers I will pick best answer on this. So what will help lower my insolin and loose weight? I heard low carbs, what foods can I get in the store that are good and low carbs? How do I make myself better before I am a diabetic for real? I just want to fix this asap. I want to loose 30 pounds as quick as I can and then work on the rest in good time like another 30 in the next 5 months after that but 30 in the next 2 to 3? will this medicin help, what should I be eating now. I know NOTHING about this so as much info is what I REALLY need. Thankyou.

Ok. First of all I don’t know what drug You are on, but Most probably it’ll be Metformin, a drug that reduces your insulin resistance. Your body has way too much insulin because your body is becoming "resistant" to insulin. In order to function normally (i.e. sugar getting into our cells for fuel) our body counters this resistance by producing more and more insulin. But sooner or later your pancreas will be exhausted, and it will stop producing enough insulin one day-thus making you a Type II diabetic. This resistance is acquired through a sedentary lifestyle and obesity.

Secondly, Losing the extra pounds is good, but NOT IN THE WAY YOU MENTIONED! Weight loss should be gradual to help us maintain the "lost" weight. Nothing drastic should be done as it can bring harm to our health. The best thing for you now is probably to start Controlling your food intake, and start EXERCISING!! Speak to a Dietitian or your doctor regarding the diet part. You can do it if you put your mind to it

is it possible to get rid of type 2 diabetes?

IS IT POSSIBLE TO RID YOURSELF FROM TYPE 2 DIABETES THROUGH DIET EXERCISE AND WEIGHT LOSS????

Not "get rid of" per se, but you have a very good chance of being able to have normal (non-diabetic) blood sugars, possibly without medication, if you catch it early on and make the effort.

Follow a healthy diet and watch portions, lose any excess weight, and exercise at least 45 min. 5x per week.

Some people find supplements such as chromium and cinnamon can also help.

Contrary to popular belief, Type 2 diabetes does NOT have to be a progressive disease if the proper lifestyle changes are made early on. Unfortunately, some doctors would rather hand out pills than give healthy living advice.

Should an overweight middle-aged man with Type 2 Diabetes include lightly buttered potatoes in his diet?

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

I’m talking both baked and boiled. How about sweet potatoes?

Potatoes are high in carbs and type 2 diabetics need to limit carb intake . The best way to determine how much he can eat is to test his blood before the meal and then 1 hour and 2 hours after the meal. If he stays below 140-150 on both of the after meal readings he can eat them. However if he goes over 150 he should either eat less or skip the potatoes. The butter is not going to affect his blood glucose.

Sweet potatoes are better than regular potatoes on not spiking as high.

Basically, you want to eat better with moderation. I studied the recommended diet for diabetics and I agree it didn’t look fun. I found if I eat healthy and lower carb the world is great. I can recommend Taste of Home web site for interesting meals. Moderation is the key.

Best Wishes

Will I be able to control my type 2 diabetes with a low carb diet such as Atkins?

Friday, October 30th, 2009

Recently diagnosed with type 2, lost 17 pounds so far, blood sugar staying normal so far. On a Atkins and hoping for the best.

You really need to discuss this with your doctor. Not take the advice of some goofballs on here.

What exactly is type 2 diabetes? With proper diet will it go away?

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

it won’t go away ever but it can be controlled with proper diet. sometimes someone with type 2 can control it with diet and not have to take the pills, but most of the times they will have to take the pills the rest of their lives.

what is type 2?

The diagnosis of type 2 diabetes is becoming increasingly common in U.S. kids and teens, especially in those who are overweight. Some studies report that between 8% and 45% of children who’ve been newly diagnosed with diabetes have the form known as type 2, depending on geographic location and racial/ethnic group.

Diabetes is a chronic condition that needs close attention, but with some practical knowledge, you can become your child’s most important ally in learning to live with the disease.

What Is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a disease that affects how the body uses glucose, the main type of sugar in the blood. Glucose comes from the foods we eat and is the major source of energy needed to fuel the body’s functions.

After you eat a meal, your body breaks down the foods you eat into glucose and other nutrients, which are then absorbed into the bloodstream from the gastrointestinal tract. The glucose level in the blood rises after a meal and triggers the pancreas to make the hormone insulin and release it into the bloodstream. But in people with diabetes, the body either can’t make or respond to insulin properly.

Insulin works like a key that opens the doors to cells and allows the glucose in. Without insulin, glucose can’t get into the cells (the doors are "locked" and there is no key) and so it stays in the bloodstream. As a result, the level of sugar in the blood remains higher than normal. High blood sugar levels are a problem because they can cause a number of symptoms and health problems.
