Can you control Type 2 diabetes with just excercise and diet?

Sunday, October 18th, 2009

I don’t want to take medication.

just wondering if it is possible

Your doctor will tell you if you need the medications and if he prescribes them, you must take them. If you get to where you are really watching your diet and exercising or walking on a regular basis, you may have to have your meds adjusted or changed as your control gets better. Some type 2 diabetics can control their disease by diet and exercise, but it is NOT true that all of them can. 83% of type 2 diabetics need medications. Those that are able to control with diet and exercise normally will need medications later in life.

Type 2 diabetes: Can someone give me some tips about how to control blood sugar with diet?

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

My dear darling 82 year old aunt has been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. She knows that she is supposed to stay off of sugary food, but when the dietitian tried to coucil her about what food groups to eat at which meals, she could not understand it. Is their a simple easy formula that I could explain to her. If it gets complicated at all, she just gets lost.

Get her a copy of the South Beach Diet. I recommend it a lot for my patients. It is so simple to use. She can lose weight on it too, but the main thing is that it is a very healthy diet for diabetics. Skip Phase one and start with Phase 2. You can get it at any book store in paper back or hard back.

How can we prevent diabetes type 2? What would be the best diet to prevent?

Monday, October 12th, 2009

I currently am writing an article about diabetes. I have been searching and reading many evidence-based articles. However, I’d like to hear your own opinion on diabetes type 2.

As you probably know heredity, plays a big roll.

For diet, whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, lean meats and poultry, Stay away from the white stuff, white bread, potato’s, sugar, white rice etc. Eat as little processed food as possible . All carbs are not created equal a white potato and a sweet potato have the same carbs but metabolize differently, check out the Glycemic Index on foods it will give you more info. Exercise, weight is a big part of it also. If it runs in your family, I don’t know if you can prevent it, but maybe you can delay it. The closer to nature the food is the better. Read labels and don’t go by net carbs unless your on Adkins. STAY AWAY FROM JUNK FOOD! I hope this helps.

I have type 2 diabetes and will be starting P90x this week. Will I need to modify any of the diet plan?

Friday, October 9th, 2009

I’ve been cleared by the doc for the program but is there anything anyone can recommend with the diet plan who has diabetes and followed the routine? So far I’m only taking metformin once a day. I found out about it 2 mo ago and pray I can get off it altogether with P90x.

Well the P90X has a pretty healthy diet so you shouldn’t have to. Just listen to your body, if you feel weak and dizzy be sure to eat a snack. Other than that you should be fine.
Good luck.

What is a good diet for type 2 diabetes?

Saturday, October 3rd, 2009

Reducing carbs to a more moderate level is usually the best way to go. Get yourself a copy of the South Beach Diet, and use the recipes and meal plans in it. You don’t need to use the first phase, which is very drastic, but the second level would probably help get blood sugar down for most type 2s.

Medications might still be necessary, such as metformin. If its prescribed by your doctor, try taking it with yogurt, a no sugar added yogurt is best, as it won’t jack up your blood sugar.

The metformin is likely to cause stomach problems at first and the yogurt usually stops this problem. Take the metformin with the yogurt before meals, with a full glass of water. Metformin is the gold standard in oral diabetes treatment for type 2. If dietary changes and metformin don’t get blood sugar down to healthy levels, and the HbA1c down under 6.0, then consider asking for insulin.

Your doctor will decide on what treatment to start with, but ultimately, diet choices are up to the patient. The healthier the diet, the better. Eat lots of salads, and have lean meats, not fatty ones, avoid processed foods, white flours, and junk food, and also cut way back on fruit for a while.

Excercise such as walking is also helpful. Talk to your doctor about your choices.

Diet 2 get rid of type 2 diabetes?

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

I am about to go 2 the store. I found out recently that i am hyperinsulinemia. I need 2 know what foods I should get to help me become healthy and loose weight. Can someone give me some helpful suggestions. What kind of diet should I put myself on to get me healthy and loose the fat?

Losing weight is not an easy thing for anyone to do. For type 2 diabetics it is even harder if the natural insulin is preventing glucose from entering the muscles and feeding them. Some of us lost enormous amount of weight from not knowing. The rest gained weight!! This is the pits part of this stupid disease!!

I follow mostly the South Beach Living phase 2 food plan. If you will lose all the complex carbs and starchy veggies for a while, you may be able to lose weight, control the glucose levels, and be healthier.

Complex carbs are breads, cereals, rices, other grain products, dried beans/lentils. Starchy veggies include most root veggies, peas and corn. Sweet soft fruits are not your friend either.

I eat mostly a 3 oz serving of meat and a large dark green leafy salad with tomatos and some other goodies like cucumbers. I always use real dressing. Fat does not make more fat!!!! It slows down the absorbtion of carbs to where we don’t spike as much.

For breakfast I usually have a couple of eggs and 2 or 3 slices bacon or sausages.

Apples, half a medium with cream cheese dip, nuts, cheeses, things like that are good snackies.

I get Spring Salad mix, tomatoes, any other fruit veggie, apples (tart preferably), and cheeses with my grocery shopping. I raise beef and lamb so don’t bother with meats, but you will want to include some meats.

a 3 oz cooked serving is like 1 chicken thigh or a small hamburger patty. Like about the size of a bar or soap or your closed fist.

good luck!! And remember to walk an hour every day as fast as you can!! takes time, don’t worry about milage, just clock your walk!!
