What are my chances of type 1 or 2 diabetes?

Friday, October 9th, 2009

Im only a teenager, and my dad has type 2 diabetes, my cousin on my dad’s sude has type 1, and my grandfather, plus his 6 relatives all have type 1 and 2 on my dad’s side. What are my chances of getting diabetes? What is the ratio? Can I prevent diabetes? And will I have to go to the hospital if I am diagnosed with type 1 or 2 diabetes?

Here are some of the symptoms:

1. Loosing weight suddenly.
2. Frequent urination.
3. Always very thirsty.
4. Dire need to eat, always hungry.
5. Blurred vision.
6. Itching of the skin.
7. Numbness in extremities (arms & lags).
8. Slow healing of wounds.
9. Vaginal yeast infection.
10. Fatigue.
11. Irritability and changes in ones mood.

These are only indicative and not conclusive. Sometimes diabetes can be without symptoms also. You will be said to have diabetes if you sugar level remains high normally. It is confirmed by testing your blood and urine sugar levels after an overnight fast and again after food/sugar syrup. If there is no sugar in your urine it is called diabetes insipidus.

How and what should i eat to reverse pre-diabetes and prevent myself from getting diabetes type 2?

Is there a special diet or specific eating habits that will prevent my developing type 2 diabetes?

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

There’s no one diet that works for everybody. People who are at high risk for diabetes should know their blood sugar and try to keep it normal. They should know their weight and what their ideal weight is for their height and they should work to try to keep that normal. And people with diabetes should know the impact of what they eat on their blood sugar.

People with diabetes often do best to moderate their intake of carbohydrate, because that’s the component of the diet that raises the blood sugar. But people with diabetes should try to see a whole health care team that not only includes the doctor but a nurse educator and a nutritionist, because diet really needs to be individualized and to be something that the person could live with. This is a marathon, not a sprint and we urge people to make small changes that they could sustain.

I would like to know information on type 2 diabetes?

I would like to know its symptoms, nutritional intake to prevent type 2 diabetes, and appropriate dishes a type 2 diabetic should consume

In many (if not most) cases, the symptoms are so slight as to go unnoticed. Nutritional intake to prevent it is a healthy diet with minimum fats… particularly dairy fats. Appropriate dishes would include those with plenty of vegetables, whole grains, and fish or chicken as opposed to beef.

According to a recent study coffee will do that.

Healthier (but easy) recipes/lifestyle ideas that might prevent type 2 diabetes?

Monday, September 21st, 2009

My mom just got home and told me she’s a few points short of getting type 2 diabetes, and that she needs to change her diet (which isn’t that hard for me to believe seeing all the fats and carbs we eat).

But we obviously want to prevent it from getting any worse than it is, so are there any recipes you’d recomend?

Low cholesterol, low saturated fat, lean meat, fruits veggies, avoid starch-y foods, low sugar, I dunno, things like that?

Neither of us have much experience with this, so please, if I’m being ridiculous don’t go too hard on me.

Websites, recipes, experience- any of these are welcome.
good point, thanks. they said her cholesterol was way too high.

A few points of what? It does make something of a difference. If they’re just saying "your weight means you’re at risk" that may not always be accurate. Some insurance programs are paid extra to over-diagnose these things as part of "prevention" methods, so they can be quick to slap labels on people who are perfectly healthy.

If, on the other hand, they’re saying "your blood sugar and insulin response is just on the borderline of being declared type 2 diabetes" then you might as well just assume that she actually has it already, because sometimes you can be experiencing symptoms even if you don’t quite qualify for an official diagnosis.

UK government regulations say that a type2diabetes patient should eat MORE starchy food, not less. Avoid really sugary foods or really fatty foods, eat lots of whole-grain, eat lots of vegetables, eat lots of fibre. And exercise. Ideally, though, your doctor should give you some guidelines. I have a relative with diabetes and they gave him a whole chart with foods to avoid, foods to moderate, foods to eat more of.

Good luck!

Hi, What are some possible ideas of what a government can do to decrease the risk of Diabetes, type 2? – Thanx

Friday, September 18th, 2009

It is possible to prevent type 2 Diabetes, especially if it is not in one’s genes. What are some responsobilities the government can take up to help. For example, so far I have: 1) More medical research 2) Preventive care covered by Health insurance. What are some other possible suggestions? – Thank you for your help.

the feds should gaurentee a decent , gaurenteed nutrional diet to every family on social assistance , or living below poverty level . you cannot be health being raised on sugar pops . schools should offer nutrional lunches at no cost . healthy food for children is not available . yet millions of tons of vegetables , fish , chicken are destroted . the goverment could save a fortune , by purchising this products , making them available to single parents etc . this would decrease farm supplements , and make young peoplwe healthier, more physically and mental healthier . seems to simple it would work .
