Asher’s Birth Story
This is a brief montage telling the amazing story of Asher’s Birth. He was born only a month early at 36 weeks, but due to complications caused by gestational diabetes he was born severely ill. He was mediflighted twice after birth and spent his first week on full life support. He was on a vent, had blood transfusions, tons of IV’s, a feeding tube, and so many wires I couldn’t keep count. After his birth, I went into congestive heart failure so I was put back into a hospital across town. My amazing husband juggled all of this while taking care of our other two boys. After a few weeks Asher fully recovered and we thank everyone for their prayers and support during this difficult time. We are truly blessed
Please never underestimate the effects of gestational diabetes. I followed my diet and took my medicines and my diabetes was considered “well controlled” I never imagined what my son would go through to survive. He has fully recovered now but still struggles with lung damage related to the ventilator and chest tubes. Asher has had many hospitalizations and he requires nebulizer treatments 4 times per day every day of the year and in the future he too will have to be tested for diabetes. I am no longer diabetic so please don’t think that just because your diabetes isn’t severe, it isn’t serious. Most cases of gestational diabetes that are well controlled do not end up the way mine did, but I just want people to be aware it can and does happen.

Asher was born …
Asher was born prematurely, he was macrasomic (which just means Large For Gestational Age) because I developed gestational diabetes in my pregnancy. His lung ruptured after birth which required him to remain on life support for a couple of weeks while he healed and his lungs matured. He now has chronic lung disease because of scar tissue in his lungs and required 4 medications daily to stay well, but we are so blessed that he is such a fighter.

I have type 1 diabetes, so I can imagine what you went through. My friend’s aunt got
gestational diabetes, but she didn’t know. Her baby was born at 15 pounds, and died shortly after from insulin shock. =[
I am so glad that your baby survived, though. God Bless!
