You are not guaranteed to get diabetes, although you do have a higher risk since it is in your family.

http://www.dlife.com/dLife/do/ShowContent/type2_information/causes_and_risk_factors/causes_and_risk_factors.html

Mainly keep your weight stable by not overeating, and make sure you continue some form of exercise throughout life. Save sugary treats for special occasions. That way you should either avoid diabetes, or get it much later if life.

Also, try to do your best to encourage your dad to take care of his diabetes, lose weight, and exercise. Over the years, he can develop some rather nasty complications like blindness, limb amputations, or kidney failure if glucose is not monitored.
References :
As long as you're overweight, you won't get it until you're like 90. It comes with being overweight, not from how much sugar you eat.

Overweightness comes from eating too many carbs. With your active lifestyle and normal weight, as long as you're not eating like 350 carbs a day, you're good!
References :
1st off

YOU'RE NOT GONNA DIE !

ok,having said that, chances are,you WILL get diabetes [ chances are ]. that's NOT going to kill you!

IF you:

stay off sugar, watch those carbs [ as they turn to sugar ],exercise regularly [ as you do ] and if it's white,it ain't right [ for you ].
no:
white bread
white rice
white potato's
and of course sugar.

there are plenty of diabetic sweeteners out there. MY choice is Fructose by Estee's. tastes JUST LIKE sugar!
splenda? YUK! PUH--TOO--EEEE !!
NASTY TASTING STUFF!

eat:
fruit
veggies [ but NOT corn or lima beans as they are bread products, like taco's,ya know and watch that cornbread ]
dark breads
yams
sweet potato's
make kool-aid with fructose sweetener
brown rice

I'm 62 and NOT on ANY diabetic meds !

how?

SHEER WILLPOWER!

I watch my diet like a vulture eyes that dying fool in the desert! ROFL!

I know,NOT funny [ diabetes ] but if you watch your diet, exercise and do all the right things, there's no chance you're gonna die!

YES! there ARE restrictions [ dietary ] but that's no reason to even suspect you're going to have to take medication later, look at ME!

look,if I can,YOU can!

just takes WILL POWER AND EDUCATION!

you've done the right thing by getting that education BEFORE it's too late. who knows, follow my advice and POSSIBLY you'll NEVER get diabetes!

there's a diabetic group called MDJunction that you can join and get educated and get support, answers to all your ?'s.

if you like,I'll e-mail that web url to you,but only if you're interested.
References :
type2 diabetic

your father developed type 2 because he doesn't watch his weight or take care in what he eats. You are NOT doomed to getting diabetes if you break the habits you have learned from him. Keep your weight normal, exercise daily, and drink enough water (2 liters daily) to maintain healthy hydration and you will not ever have to worry about type 2 diabetes. Type 2 is not genetically linked, only type 1 is. Type 2 happens as a result of obesity, poor dietary choices and lack of exercise. All of which you can control.
References :
RN
