You can definitely cut down on your risks for Type 2 diabetes by living a healthy lifestyle. Eat a healthy, balanced diet and get regular exercise in order to maintain a healthy body weight, etc. Obesity / being overwieght increases your risk for developing Type 2 diabetes.
However, no matter how hard you work, you may not be able to avoid developing diabetes. Diabetes is hereditary and depends a lot on your genetics and family history.

Good luck and best wishes in your search...
References :
I am a Diabetes Health Educator and a Type 2 diabetic.

There are no medical guarantees. The two most important factors are weight and exercise. Excess body fat is probably the single most important factor in triggering the disease. There is a genetic component, but even then, staying at a healthy weight can lower the chances of getting Diabetes.
References :
The best way is to eat right, exercise, and avoid carrying too much weight. That does not mean that you can PREVENT it, but you can make it much easier to treat. The more fat you carry on your body, the less efficiently your body will use its own insulin. In type 2, you are still making insulin, your body just can't use it. So eating a healthy diet and regular exercise will help your body burn off the excess glucose in your blood.
