how do you prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes?

Diabetes Prevention
Diabetes prevention is proven, possible, and powerful. Studies show that people at high risk for type 2 diabetes can prevent or delay the onset of the disease by losing 5 to 7 percent of their body weight. You can do it by eating healthier and getting 30 minutes of physical activity 5 days a week. In other words: you don’t have to knock yourself out to prevent diabetes

    Change your life style.
If you are overweight, get down to your "ideal" weight.
Cut whites from your diet. Sugar, bread, rice. Whole grains are best.
    Limit alcohol consumption.
    Fresh fruits, vegetables.
    Eat smaller amounts.
    Exercise.
Stress has a lot to do with Diabetes. Stay as stress free as possible.
See your Dr. if you experience unexplained increase in thirst, urinating, and fatigue. Be very alarmed if your urine smells like acetone or you develop a fruity odor to your breath. Sudden change in body odor is also an indication something is wrong.

I think the best prevention would be the same method I used to reverse my diabetes from being on medication, with symptoms growing worse each day, to being medication free (as of December 2007) with symptoms continuing to improve each day. That method is simply a very healthy raw, natural foods based diet and moderate daily exercise. The key is keeping fat burned off while furnishing the cells with the nutrients they need to do their jobs most efficiently. Since regaining my health, I can stray off the diet occasionally without severe blood glucose swings like in the past. It doesn’t mean I’m cured, but it’s the next best thing,

To prevent it, you should make sure you are at a healthy weight. Exercise a lot, and eat really healthy. Do not eat sugar before bed, and get enough sleep.

If diabetes runs in your family it is very important to watch your carb intake before you get any symptoms of diabetes and this can prolong you getting it or even keep you from getting it. Almost everything has carbs in it so you really have to read labels and watch serving sizes. Meats, cheeses, nuts, leafy greens, eggs, cottage cheese and sugar free jello are some basic starter foods. I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes 4 months ago and believe me, it’s worth it to invest the time and trouble before you get it to watch what you eat rather than after the fact. Learn to say no to sugary sweets or to have very small portions. Stay away from regular soft drinks! Also limit your intake of potatoes, rice, pasta, and bread. Right now, I can’t have any of those things because if I did, it would drive my sugar up high and make me sick. Diabetes is serious, but if one monitors what one eats, it is controllable. Watch out for things that say fat free because these usually are high in carbs. Just keep in mind that Carbs are the enemy when it comes to blood sugar and they have to be limited to maintain balance in the body. Also exercise every day, even if it’s just going for a 30 minute walk and drink lots of water!!!!

I agree with Redwrite a 1000%. To add to her excellent explanation, you are suffering from your insulin receptors being downgraded by the hyperinsulinity. It takes more and more insulin to turn on your cellular insulin receptors to pump the sugar out of the blood. Its sort of like going into a room that has a bad smell. In a few minutes the smell is not that noticeable. It would take a higher concentration of the odor for you to notice. Your nose got "used" to the level of concentration. Cellular insulin receptors are the same. By eating a predominate carbohydrate diet, your are forcing your pancreas to produce more and more insulin to pump out the blood sugar. Soon the pancreas can not create enough insulin (thus type 2). There is a concoction that helps with the blood sugar fluctuation it’s been called "Waddle Juice".
Mix 64 of Welches Red Grape Juice with 8oz of apple cider vinegar and add 3 oz pack of liquid pectin( Certo or Ball). Mix thoroughly, refrigerate, drink 2oz 3 time a day( morning, after diner, and before bed). Do this every day. A side benefit it reduces cholesterol like a statin with out side effects. It really works!!!

    Good luck!

Getting over weight is usually what causes it, and the consumption of red meat has to do with it http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0FKA/is_12_66/ai_n7576823/, so just don’t get overweight or eat to much red meat (or any) and excersize at least 30 minutes a day with a good heart rate, mine is between 125-165, but I am only 15 (with type 1) but Ive learned about both, and every day it makes your heart stronger. I am normal weight and just because I have diabetes, I could have a heart attack and so I have to excersize. I have my mother and doctors warning me, because I hate running on the treadmill.
