There is type 2 diabetes on both sides of my family, what can I do NOW to prevent it from happening later?
Well, at least keep it so I don’t have it bad.
Eat nutritiously, exercise, and stay slim.

Eat healthy, don’t eat too much sugar, and take plenty of vitamins.

Don’t eat so much kinds of food that have a lot of sugar. Try to keep an average weight. This is all the information that I know. Maybe your doctor can help you out.

Keep your weight within normal limits, exercise (particularly cardio) and try to avoid a lot of sugar and highly processed foods–especially stay away from soda, for a lot of other reasons also.

Both sides of my family have type 2 as well, and I’m 50 and have no signs of it. Here’s what I think has helped.
1. A good diet. Not an okay diet, a good one. Loads of veggies, fruit, fresh foods. I don’t eat fast food at all. Whole grains, not processed white stuff. Avoid eating a lot of high-glycemic foods (you can find information about this in books or online).
2. Exercise, exercise, exercise. If you want your organs to work right, you have to keep extra weight off them, keep blood circulating well, etc. Find something you like to do, and do it!
3. Drink lots of water, get enough sleep.
Good luck!

There are some medications that have been shown to reduce the chances of developing diabetes, but absolute best way to prevent type 2 diabetes is to exercise and eat a healthy diet. 30 minutes of exercise daily and a decrease in body weight of 5-10% has been shown to significantly reduce the chances of developing diabetes.

Good news is type 2 is easily prevented with a healthy diet and exercise and just because it is on both sides of the family you shouldn’t assume you will get it. Type 2 is usually brought on by poor lifestyles and not genetics as in the case of type 1.
